In the last 3 years of my existence, I have had the pleasure and opportunity to learn a lot about some of the most fascinating areas of modern material life. The most fundamental of all aspects is communicating what you want to the other party. I being a student of Communications and Signal Processing for the last 3 years have got some feel of the subject and would like to share my thoughts, ideas and things which I know with you. Your feedback is extremely essential and I would be really happy to correct any gaps in my understanding. Please do send in your ideas to m o h r a h i t @ y a h o o . c o m
There seems to be some confusion among Indian students, about the difference between Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The field of Electrical Engineering can be classified into two broad categories depending on the power levels under consideration.
- Power Systems usually involve high energy and power levels ~ KiloWatts and higher. These typically involve generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. One talks about transformers, motors, generators and magnetic fields. Everything is in some sense on a "macro" scale. These systems constitute the backbone of our day-to-day activities and availabilty of cheap and continuous power supply is a very important factor for setting up industries.
- Electronic Systems on the other hand involve relatively "micro" power levels ~ milliWatts and lower. These typically consist of embedded systems, things like computer circuitry, your watches etc. The advent of VLSI design and technology has revolutionised this field and a lot of progess has been made in the last two decades.
Another classification that is more relevant to me is to partition Electrical Engineering into "finding use of electrical circuits" and "making circuits that satisfy the required criteria". This classifies the subject into
- Communications and Signal Processing deals with the problem of sending "information" from one place to another in the most efficient way. This leads to many interesting results and problems which require one to use ideas from fields as diverse as Linguisitics (coding theory), Physics and Mathematics. This is my specific area of interest.
- MicroElectronics consists of design and verification of circuits and circuit components to improve the overall performance of Electronic Systems. It borrows heavily from Physics, Logic and Mathematics.
- Control Systems is a cross-disciplinary area in which one makes control elements which act on existing physical systems and make them perform in a certain specified and desired way. Control Systems exist in all machines, aircrafts, robots etc. This field needs inputs from Mathematics and other branches of engineering.
I have been
exploring the broad area of Communications and Signal Processing and
have tried to put together some stuff which I have collected over the
years. I would be glad to receive your inputs on these or any other
topic related to these. I am always eager to learn, share and help in
any way I can. Please do drop in a mail at m o h r a h i t @ y a h o o . c o m
